Founded by engineer & engine manufacturer Henry M. Leland in 1902, Cadillac is part of the General Motors family of automobile brands. Leland and financiers William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen formed the company from the ashes of the Henry Ford Motor company, which was dissolved when Henry Ford left the company after a dispute to start the Ford Motor Company. Leland and his partners named their new company Cadillac after the founder of Detroit; 17th century French explorer Antoine Laumet de la Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac.
The first Cadillac car was almost identical to the 1930 Ford Model A, but with a Leland single-cylinder engine and higher-quality, more precise manufacturing. In fact, the idea of identical, interchangeable parts was a Cadillac innovation, for which the company won the Dewar Trophy in 1908. Cadillac became famous its quality and superlative finish, and was soon considered one of the worlds finest automobiles. Other cutting-edge Cadillac innovations are the steel roof (prior automobile tops were fabric-covered wood frames), shatter-resistant glass, tailfins, automatic climate control heating/air conditioning, and airbags. The company was also the first automaker to use Phillips screws to speed assembly time, and in the 1980s utilized variable-displacement engines to deactivate cylinders for improved fuel efficiency. Cadillac's aluminum Northstar V8 engine remains one of the most powerful yet lightweight production engines ever made, as is a favorite among motorsports and hot rod enthusiasts.
Late-model Cadillac cars and SUVs are designed to go head-to-head with the best European performance sedans. In fact, the Cadillac CTS-V held the record for the fastest lap time ever for a production sedan on the legendary Nürburgring race track in 2009, beat only recently by three seconds by the Porsche Pamamera Turbo. Owners are justifiably discriminating when it comes to repair and replacement Cadillac parts for their cars, often insisting on genuine Cadillac parts and eschewing worn, used Cadillac parts.
