The first in the line of Saturn wagons showed up in 1993, and the base model was the SW1. It was virtually the same as the SL1 sedan, sharing most Saturn SW1 parts, with the exception of a wagon rear end. The under-powered 85hp engine was replaced after only two years with the 100hp engine which improved fuel economy and, obviously, power. And who can forget Saturn's trademark plastic body panels, reducing weight and production costs, and bringing incredible value to owners. One downside to this design was the road noise - which Saturn promptly fixed by adding sound deadening material for 1996 and later models. Fun fact: Saturn's advertising campaign in 1999 included a TV spot that highlighted the polymer body panels by showing children playing baseball in the front yard, and using a Saturn SW1 as their backstop.
