The Acura Legend was the first Japanese luxury car sold in the US. Honda was traveling into unchartered waters at a time when many questioned if American consumers would accept a Japanese-made luxury sedan. The Acura Legend debuted with a state-of-the-art design and Acura Legend parts proved to be well made and reliable. Honda deserves the credit for creating a market that would soon Include Lexus and Infiniti. The Acura Legend was changed to the RL and later the RLX because the marketing department believed that luxury buyers responded better to alphanumeric designations in place of traditional names. There was a Legend coupe offered as well that was available with a six speed manual transmission, a rare option in the early 90s.
