TT stands for Tourist Trophy and the name harkens back to the NSU TT model. The Tourist Trophy name comes from the motorcycle race on the Isle of Man that NSU successfully competed in. The NSU and Audi models are almost completely different but they capture the same buyer by offering a performance model with great styling. Many Audi TT parts are shared with the Volkswagen Golf but one could never tell simply by looking at them.
