Offered only as a luxury trim level for the Impala in 1965, the Chevrolet Caprice has been enormously popular since it earned its own model name in 1966. The Caprice was built on the Impala platform, and was Chevrolet's top-of-the-line offering in the full-size market. Chevrolet Caprice parts are almost always the same as those on the Impala, with the exception of some trim and interior appointments. The Caprice was also a favorite among fleet buyers such as taxi services, municipal police departments, and the like. In 1996, after 30 years of production, it was discontinued in North America but still exported to Middle Eastern nations. Beginning in 2011, Holden of Australia has produced some specifically for law enforcement agencies.
