The now disused Imperial nameplate is one of the longest running in the auto industry. From 1955 to 1975 Imperial was actually a stand-alone nameplate which was meant to help it compete with Cadillac and Lincoln. The name was briefly revived in the early 80s featuring a Frank Sinatra edition and then again in the early 90s as a K-car based sedan but neither model made much of an impact on the market. With Chrysler no longer owned by Mercedes, it seems possible that a top line Imperial model will return again.
