Aftermarket & OEM Door Window Switch

How to identify a broken power window switch.

We've all become used to pressing our door window switch right next to us and the window glass smoothly going up or down at our whim. But what happens when it suddenly stops working? For starters, you won't be able to control your window. If it's hot outside your car, then it will be hot inside your car. If it's raining outside your car, then it will be raining inside your car. Not only would you be subject to the trials of your environment, but if your door window switch is broken and your window is stuck down, then you are inviting any passer-by to take a look inside and help themselves to your change, phone-charger, etc. So why take the chance? When you press that window switch button and don't hear any movement inside the door panel from your window regulator motor, get it tested to see if it's broken. You'll be happy you did.

A brief history of power windows and switches.

New Power Door Window SwitchPower windows have been around since the 1920's, but they did not really gain in popularity until the middle of the 20th century. There are many parts that are involved in raising and lowering your windows, but none so simple as your door window switch. It is installed in either your arm rest or center console, and is responsible for closing and/or opening the circuit that controls your power window motor. Some door window switches have lock-out mechanisms built into them so that small children cannot control the windows. Others have one-touch controls that eliminate the need to hold the switch up or down for the entire time the window is raising or lowering.

A simple D.I.Y. & video.

Changing your door window switch is usually very easy. They are almost always mounted in a small cup or panel on your door or center console. If you can get the bezel that covers the switch off, then you can usually pull it right out of the circuit board. For some cars, you will have to remove the entire door panel in order to access the switch. Either way, it does not take any special skills or know-how to do this. Your owner's manual will usually tell you just how to access and replace your broken door window switch.
