For most of its life, the Ford LTD was a full-size semi-luxurious vehicle built from 1965-82. It was made to compete with the Chevrolet Caprice, another full-size car that was equipped with a variety of luxury options without being sold at the high price point of contemporary luxury cars. Buyers could expect to have power windows, power steering, air conditioning, power brakes, and a lot of other "powerful" accessories. In addition, a large V8 engine could typically be found under the hood. The only exception to everything mentioned above would be the fourth and final generation of the LTD built from 1983-86. It was a downsized and more modestly-powered sedan, built on the same platform as the Mustang but without the V8 engine. Its first couple of years sold very well, but the brand new Ford Taurus pushed the LTD out of the market and took its place as Ford's mid-size offering. Fun fact: Chevy Chase drove the famous green with wood panel siding Ford LTD Country Squire wagon across country in National Lampoon's Vacation.
