The Ranger name had been used for years on the full-size Ford pickup but it became the first American built compact for pickup in 1983. The Ranger is no longer sold on the American market but there is hope that a new international version will be launched here again. The Ranger?s compact predecessor was the Courier and was built by Mazda in Japan. The Ranger was American made and Ford designed and was later sold as the Mazda B-Series. Early versions offered a wide array of body styles and engines including turbo diesels. Later they offered sporty looking step side models called the Splash cab with body-side graphics and wild paint colors. From 1998-2002, they were available as a fully electric vehicle.
