In the early 1970's, Honda considered pulling out of car-making altogether due to poor sales and a lack of interest domestically. However, the Civic was their ticket out of automobile manufacturing mediocrity and into stardom. It boasted an extremely fuel efficient, transverse mounted 4-cylinder engine, and a wide variety of available options. Over the course of its life, the Honda Civic has moved from sub-compact to compact, increasing its wheelbase from 87 inches to 102 inches and creating more power with its trademark low displacement, high compression 4-cylinder engines. Honda Civic parts are also in high demand, because since its debut in 1972 almost 20 million have been sold worldwide.
