History of Kia
South Korean automaker Kia Motors was founded in 1944, the name of which means "rising out of Asia". The company originally manufactured bicycles and steel tubing parts, but revised its name to Kyungsung Precision Industry in 1952 and started building motorcycles (1957), trucks (1962), cars (1974) and military vehicles for the South Korean government. Kia Motors America was incorporated in 1992 and started selling cars and Kia parts from four dealerships in Oregon. Sales in the United States were strong, however the Asian financial crisis forced the automaker to file for bankruptcy protection in 1997, which enabled competitive automaker Hyundai to purchase a 51% ownership share in 1998. As of 2009, the corporation is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea and has approximately 640 car dealerships in the United States and is the eighth best-selling brand in America.
