In 1978, the Mercedes 300SD became the world's first production turbodiesel sedan. The OM617 inline 5-cylinder engine was dropped into the 116 chassis, which was a full-size luxury sedan at the time. A couple of years later, the 126 took over as the full-size offering in the Mercedes catalog and took the reliable engine as well. It was produced through 1985, and sold over 100,000 in those eight years. Considered to be one of the most durable vehicles produced at that time, Mercedes-Benz 300SD parts are typically available if repairs or replacements are needed.
