The Mercury Cougar name has been applied to many types of cars over the years. 1967-1973 were the glory years when the Cougar was a high performance luxury version of the Ford Mustang. When the Mustang II was launched, the Cougar stayed with its luxury roots and moved to the platform of the Ford Torino Elite. In subsequent years it was sold as a sedan and even a station wagon for the 1977 and 1982 model years only. In 1977, it shared platform with the Thunderbird and stayed that way until 1996 when both cars were discontinued. The Cougar came back immediately though with an all-new front drive platform and sharp styling. The front wheel drive Cougar was meant to be a replacement for the Ford Probe.
