The Marquis name replaced Monclair as the top name in Mercury's full-size lineup. By 1969 it was on its own body always featuring covered headlights and big v8 engines. It was similar to Ford's full-size LTD model. In 1979, it was downsized to the Panther platform along with the LTD. In 1983, the Marquis and Grand Marquis nameplates were split up with the Grand Marquis remaining on the full size platform while the Marquis moved to the smaller Fox platform. For the first time a four cylinder engine was available. A rare model is the Marquis LTS which had a high output version of Ford's 302 V8 and was only offered in Canada.
