Originally a shipping firm, the name stands for "three waterchestnuts". The growing company expanded into coal mining in 1881 in order to power their fleet of steamships, and later diversified into ship building, insurance, warehousing, banking, paper, glass, steel, electronics, aircraft parts, petroleum products and real estate. The Japanese conglomerate was so large it directly influenced Japanese industry and its modernization throughout the twentieth century. Mitsubishi Motors is currently headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan, with Osamu Masuko as its President. The "three diamonds" company has utilized a multitude of strategic partnerships with other automakers, such as Fiat, Chrysler, Hyundai, Willys/Kaiser, Peugeot and Volvo.
