Where were you when you saw your first Smart? The Smart launched in Europe in 1998 and created quite the sensation but US sales did not start until a decade later. The Smart Fortwo was envisioned as the answer to Europe's increasingly crowded cities. The relative popularity of grey-market imports inspired Daimler to import them officially. These rear drive machines are powered by a one liter three-cylinder engine designed by Mitsubishi and now an all-electric motor. The Smart range of cars has included a four door and roadster model but those were never offered in the US. The Smart name combines Swatch, Mercedes-Benz, and Art. Smart Fortwo parts were designed by Swatch and Mercedes.
