This re-boot of the BRAT was launched in 2003 as Subaru's return to the compact utility/versatility market. This time, the Subaru Baja had four doors instead of just two. It was built on the same platform as the Legacy Outback, so many Subaru Baja parts are the same. However, the most distinguishable difference was the small open bed in the rear and sporty appearance. The name Baja refers to the peninsula in Mexico, and was meant to inspire thoughts of rally truck racing. Unfortunately, its attempt at broad appeal fell far short of sales projections, and the model was cancelled after only a few years.
