Suzuki was new to the US when the Samurai came to market in 1986. The shrunken Jeep Wrangler style vehicle attracted a lot of attention with its canvas top and simple but effective four wheel drive system. Some versions were painted in wild colors or with zebra stripes making the Samurai a unique vehicle in the US. The Samurai was involved in a well known lawsuit against Consumer Reports magazine. The magazine reported that the Samurai was prone to rollover in jerky high speed maneuvers though to be fair, that was true of vehicles with a narrow track and high center of gravity. Later upgrades made Suzuki Samurai parts more suitable for on road use sales never recovered. Though discontinued in the USA, the Samurai is still sold as the Jimny in many parts of the world.
