Sport utility vehicles really reached broad mainstream popularity in the 1990s but Toyota was well ahead of the curve with the 4Runner that was launched in 1984. Originally based directly on the Toyota pickup truck, the 4Runner became one the most popular and reliable SUVs on or off the road. Early models were two door but this has since given way to strictly four door models. The Toyota 4Runner parts have retained their tough body-on-frame attributes throughout the production run. The 4Runner is currently on its fifth generation. The powerful V8 model has been discontinued leaving a four cylinder. Even with the increasing popularity of crossovers, the 4Runner probably has many generations ahead of it.
