Many vehicles know as cabriolets have been offered over the years but Volkswagen uses the name for its Rabbit based model. When the mark 2 Golf replaced the original Rabbit in the US, the Rabbit Convertible simply became the Cabriolet and continued with mark 1 styling. The distinctive styling included a black roll bar that remained erect when the folding roof was down. They were manufactured by Karmann of Karmann Ghia fame. Volkswagen Cabriolet parts are most similar to the mark 1 Golf and Rabbit parts. There was a partnership with fashion house Etienne Aigner to produce a trim level that featured the company's name printed numerous times on the seats.
