Counting all models, the Volkswagen Golf is the second best-selling car of all time. Originally known as the Rabbit in the US, the Golf was hailed a revelation when launched in 1974. The transverse watercooled-engine , front-wheel drive hatchback was a complete departure from the rear-engined air-cooled Beetle and marked the beginning of a complete change in design direction for the German carmaker. The pressed and creased styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro was perfectly up to date with the times. Although the Golf is a big seller worldwide, it has not been a big seller in the US due to the general unpopularity of hatchbacks. Volkswagen Golf parts include diesel and high performance GTI models.
