Like other models, the Passat was named after a wind and the Passat name translates as tradewind in German. The Passat was initially sold as the Dasher in the US, then as the Quantum for several years. The first car named Passat came in 1990. The Passat is one of the few midsize cars offering a diesel engine. The B5 model shared a platform with the then new Audi A4 and was available with Volkswagen's version of Quattro called 4motion. For many years, the Passat struggled sales-wise in the US due to premium pricing. This made since because Volkswagen Passat parts always offered and upscale feel. The current US market Passat is being made in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the first Volkswagen made in the US since 1984. It has come in at a lower price point and has had much better sales then past Passats. It still offers a diesel engine.
