When Volkswagen began switching to water-cooled engines they began naming many of their vehicles after winds. The Scirocco is named after a desert wind that blows off the Mediterranean Sea. Much as the Karmann Ghia was meant to make the Beetle into a sports car, the Scirocco was meant to be a sporty version of the recently introduced Golf/Rabbit platform. Interestingly the Scirocco was launched first because it was a lower volume model and Volkswagen wanted to ensure that quality standards were high for the Golf. Volkswagen Scirocco parts like piston rings, brakes, and steering parts are always available on our website. The Scirocco was reintroduced in 2008 but is not sold in the US for fears that it would take sales from the GTI model.
