The end of Volvo's rear-wheel drive platform in 1998 gave it an opportunity to introduce a new flagship vehicle. The S80 was that vehicle. It used an all-new design, not based on any previous model. It was immensely popular from the start, selling over 45,000 vehicles per year. It served as the platform for a number of later model sedans built by both Volvo and Ford (who owned Volvo at the time), with FWD or AWD drive trains.
