The end of Volvo's rear-wheel drive platform in 1998 gave it an opportunity to introduce a new flagship vehicle. The S80 was that vehicle. It used an all-new design, not based on any previous model. It was immensely popular from the start, selling over 45,000 vehicles per year. It served as the platform for a number of later model sedans built by both Volvo and Ford (who owned Volvo at the time), with FWD or AWD drive trains. Because of the vehicle's ubiquity, Volvo S80 parts are very readily available online. Happy shopping!
